10th Annual Presidents Meeting

APRU held its 10th Annual Presidents Meeting in
Sydney from June 22 to 24, 2006.
26 university presidents
and 56 delegates attended the meeting hosted by the University of
Sydney.

The newly established APRU World Institute (AWI) was

APRU
Forum
The APRU 10th Annual Presidents Meeting included a
one-day forum on "The New Macro Environment of Higher Education:
Redefining University-Industry Interfaces and Paradigm Shifts in
Science and Technologies" held on June 23, 2006.
Four eminent industry leaders from around the Asia
Pacific region were invited to speak at this forum:

Mr John Mork, President and CEO, Energy Corporation
of America;

Mr Xie Ke Hai, Vice President, Peking University
Founder Group Co., Ltd;

Dr Chang-Gyu Hwang, President and CEO, Semiconductor
Business, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd; and

Mr Will Delaat, Managing Director, Merck Sharp and
Dohme (Australia) Pty Limited.

Presidents from the Group of Eight (Go8) universities also attended
the APRU Forum and social activities.

Elections was conducted at APRU's Business Meeting on June 24, 2006.
University of Sydney's Vice-Chancellor Professor
Gavin Brown was elected as the new Chairman of APRU. Professor
Shih Choon Fong, President of National University of Singapore was
appointed Chairman Emeritus of APRU. Dr Lawrence Loh, Vice
President of University and Global Relations, National University of
Singapore was re-elected as Secretary General.

APRU World Institute
The newly established APRU World Institute (AWI) was
a major initiative endorsed at the Presidents Meeting. AWI's Governing Board would be headed by National
University of Singapore's President and APRU Chairman Emeritus,
Professor Shih Choon Fong. Dr Richard Drobnick from University
of Southern California, has been appointed as the Institute's Managing
Director.
The AWI aims to become a leading center for research
excellence in interdisciplinary studies and policy-making, in order
to help decision-makers better under global transformations in an
increasingly integrated world. It draws strength from APRU's
36-member talent base and beyond to engage in research issues of
global significance relating to public health, environmental
sustainability and economic integration.
