Election of APRU Vice Chairman

Professor Yuichiro Anzai, President of Keio University was elected as APRU's Vice Chairman at the Annual Presidents Meeting.  Professor Anzai became President of Keio University in 2001.  He is currently the President of the Japan Association of Private Colleges and Universities, Federation of Japanese Private Colleges and Universities, and Chairman of Federation of All Japan Private Schools Associations.

Professor Anzai graduated from Keio University with Bachelor of Engineering, Applied Chemistry from Keio University in 1969.  Thereafter he went on to a Masters in Engineering and Administration Engineering and a Ph.D in Administration Engineering with Keio University in 1971 and 1974 respectively.

APRU Forum and Business Meeting

Hosted by Zhejiang University, APRU's 11th Annual Presidents Meeting took place in Hangzhou, China from May 28-30, 2007.  25 university presidents and 68 delegates from member universities and leading Chinese universities from Project "985" participated in the meeting.

A key highlight of the Presidents Meeting was the APRU Forum on "Higher Education and Emerging Economies: Developments in Asia Pacific and International Cooperation in China" on May 29.  The Forum was graced by eminent speakers such as His Excellency Zhang Xinsheng, Vice Minister of Education, People's Republic of China; Professor Franklin Yang Chen Ning, Distinguished Physicist, Winner of the 1957 Nobel Prize in Physics; and Professor Tu Weiming, Director, Harvard-Yenching Institute and Professor, Harvard University.

H.E. Zhang Xinsheng spoke on China's higher education landscape, while Professor Franklin Yang presented on the topic of "Science and Technology in the 21st Century".  Professor Tu Weiming gave a keynote speech on "Beyond the Enlightenment Mentality: The Humanistic Spirit in the 21st Century".  The day wrapped up with a dinner hosted by Mr Lu Zushan, Governor of Zhejiang province at the West Lake State Guesthouse.

The last day of the Presidents Meeting had member presidents and delegates focusing on the strategic directions and initiatives of the consortium.  Presidents also had the opportunity to share and inform their counterparts of the strategic programs, initiatives and developments in their respective universities.
