Nanjing University, one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in China, is located in Nanjing, a beautiful southern city known as the ancient capital of six dynasties and for its rich cultural heritage. Founded in 1902, Nanjing University has its roots in Sanjiang Normal School. Today’s Nanjing University came into being as a result of the merger with the school of arts and that of sciences of the University of Nanking (founded in 1888) during the nationwide institutional and departmental restructuring in 1952.
Nanjing University is a key university directly under the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. With three campuses, it has developed into a top university in China. Presently, Nanjing University has set up 6 special discipline zones as follows: Institutes of Molecular Medicine, Institute for Earth System Science, Institute for Theoretical and Computational Chemistry, Institute of Modern Mathematics, Institute of Model Animal Research, Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences. The National Laboratory of Microstructure at Nanjing is located at Nanjing University, based on the University’s State Key Laboratory of Solid State Microstructure Physics and State Key Laboratory of Coordination Chemistry. Since 2000, the University has won one first-class National Natural Science Award, ten second-class National Natural Science Awards and one National Award for Technological Progress. The recently published Critical Biography Series of Chinese Thinkers, A Collected Edition of Ci Poems in Qing Dynasty, New Time English-Chinese Dictionary, A History of Republic of China and A Collection of Historical Materials of Nanjing Massacre by Nanjing University have exerted a strong influence on humanities and social sciences studies in China. Among these publications, Critical Biography Series of Chinese Thinkers (200 books in all) is so far the biggest research project on Chinese traditional thoughts and culture.
Besides, quite a large number of international academic cooperation and exchange programs are ongoing now. The Center for Chinese and American Studies was established with John Hopkins University, the German and Chinese Institute for Law Studies with Universitaet Goettingen, the Center for Chinese and Japanese Studies with University of Tokyo, and the Center for Urban Studies with the University of Paris XII. Moreover, the Center for Chinese and American Studies jointly runs a master program. Nanjing University has recently signed an MOU with State University of New York for the joint establishment of SUNY- NJU International Higher Education Institution.
Nanjing University is aimed to be a world standard university which is characterized with comprehensiveness, research-intensiveness and internationalization.
