The Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) / Association of East Asian Research Universities (AEARU) Research Symposium on “Earthquake Hazards around the Pacific Rim - Prediction and Disaster Prevention” was hosted by Kyoto University from 31 August to 2 September 2005 in Japan.

Attracting 116 researchers from 26 APRU and AEARU member universities, the three-day research symposium engaged participants in mentally-stimulating presentation discussions, interactive workshops and poster sessions.

Carefully thought out optional activities such as tsunami workshop, excursion to Kobe and walk along the Hanaore Fault were also included in the program to provide participants with a refreshing change from the usual concept of research symposiums.

A special highlight was the establishment of APRU awards for participating students at the research symposium.  Developed to encourage interaction and facilitate sharing of knowledge between researchers and students, the monetary awards were awarded to three students who displayed good knowledge of the subject matter and clear presentation of ideas in their posters.

Linking People, Bridging Distance

Dr Diana Oblinger of Educause presenting keynote via tele-conference at DLI 2005.

Far Eastern National University hosted the 6th Distance Learning and the Internet Conference (DLI) on “Linking People Through Information Technology Education” from October 4 to 7, 2005.

The approach to this year’s conference was unique: Of the 107 leading international experts who attended, about 20 of them participated remotely through video-conference and web-casting.  Besides presentations by subject matter experts, a student panel was also formed to share experiences in distance learning courses and programs. This cumulated in a commencement ceremony for international blended learning dual degree program conducted by the Far Eastern National University and Maryland University College.
