APRU Research Symposium on Prediction and Prevention of Earthquake and Tsunami Disasters

An APRU research symposium on 'Earthquake Hazards around the Pacific Rim - Prediction and Disaster Prevention' will be held at Kyoto University from August 31 to September 2, 2005.

Following the recent earthquake and tsunami in Asia, this symposium which was already being planned for prior to the catastrophe, will be timely in addressing an important global issue that the world is facing today. As the number of mega-population centers around the Pacific Rim increases, every city faces a certain level of earthquake risk.  Understanding the implications involved, the symposium will focus on monitoring and prediction of earthquakes and how seismic hazards can be mitigated.

The symposium will provide participants with a platform to share information on aspects like evaluation methods of such hazards and counter-measures in various countries.  It will also serve as a portal of useful information for worldwide benchmarking of counter-measures implemented in various countries.

Further updates will be available in due course.
