Chief Information Officers Conference (March 21-23, 2007) University of Southern California will be hosting APRU's inaugural Chief Information Officers (CIO) conference from March 21 to 23, 2007. The conference aims to attract and form a network of key IT leaders and senior professionals among APRU member universities. Such a platform would provide for an exchange of best strategic practices, as well as facilitate the formation of partnerships among Chief Information and Technology Officers in Pacific Rim Universities.

The research symposium on “Brain and Mind Research in the Asia Pacific (BMAP)” was hosted by University of Sydney from August 13 to 16, 2006. About 60 brain researchers and field experts in neurology, psychiatry and neuroscience gathered for this symposium. The multidisciplinary setting of the symposium lent opportunities for brain researchers to collaborate in their respective strengths. The BMAP Steering Committee convened to drive brain and mind research in the Asia Pacific includes Keio University, National University of Singapore, Peking University, Seoul National University, University of Auckland, University of Oregon and University of Sydney. The next BMAP symposium is planned for 2008. |

University of Melbourne was recently admitted as APRU’s 37th member university. The university is recognized for its strengths in education, research and global connectedness. Secretary General Dr Lawrence Loh called on Vice-Chancellor Professor Glyn Davis in August to welcome University of Melbourne into APRU. Established in 1853, the university currently has 15 faculties and is a member of the Australian Group of Eight Universities. |

APRU’s Inaugural Research Symposium on Brain and Mind in the Asia Pacific |

Fudan University hosted the first APRU Undergraduate Summer Program 2006 on “Introduction to Modern China” from July 24 to August 4, 2006. Participants were introduced to socio-economic, political and cultural aspects of China through lectures and field trips to cultural venues in and out of Shanghai. 59 undergraduates from 27 member universities participated in the first run of APRU Undergraduate Summer Program. A second run of the program is expected in July 2007. |

Prize Money US$20,000 Awarded at APRU Business Plan Competition The first APRU Enterprise Business Plan Competition: Extra Chapter Challenge (ECC) took place concurrently with the 7th Doctoral Students Conference (DSC) at National University of Singapore from July 17 to 21, 2007. Doctoral students were encouraged to write an extra chapter in their dissertations on how their research output can be commercialized. 13 teams participated and presented their multi-faceted business plans to a leading group of judges made up of members of the venture capital community, industry leaders, experts and investors. The first prize of US$10,000 was awarded to Mr Mik Kersten from the University of British Columbia for his work on “The Task Focused Desktop”. Ms Barbara Nancy Miller and Ms Jill Ilene Schwimmer from University of Oregon received the second prize of US$6,000 for their educational project that helped children overcome reading difficulties. Ms Wei Xiaoqian from NUS came in third for her advanced memory stick solution. |

· Seoul National University President Lee Jang-Moo took over the leadership rein from Professor Chung Un-Chan as Seoul National University’s 24th President on July 20, 2006. Besides serving on numerous national committees and institutions in Korea, President Lee also holds key positions in many professional associations and societies such as Korean Society for New and Renewable Energy and Association of Korean Societies of Science and Technology. President Lee received a Ph.D. in engineering at the University of Iowa and was appointed a professor at Seoul National University in 1976. · Zhejiang University President Yang Wei was appointed as President of Zhejiang University with effect from August 1, 2006. He takes over from Professor Pan Yunhe, who is currently Vice-President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. As a scientist specialized in solid mechanics, President Yang is a member of China’s Academy of Sciences and the Third World Academy of Sciences. He has also previously served as Chairman of the Academic Committee of Tsinghua University and Head of Department of Degree Management and Graduate Education of China’s Ministry of Education. |

APRU’s 7th Distance Learning and Internet Conference & IT Exhibition |

University of Tokyo hosted the 7th Distance Learning and the Internet Conference (DLI) from November 8 to 10, 2006. The theme for this year’s conference was “Technology Enabled Global Knowledge Structuring” with keynote and invited talks by University of Tokyo President Hiroshi Komiyama and Keio University President Yuichiro Anzai. |

The sessions centered around various sub-themes such as ubiquitous learning, content development support, virtual laboratories and multi-lingual learning environments. |

The conference included an IT exhibition featuring corporations such as Cisco Systems, Fujitsu, Apple, Hitachi and NEC Corporation. Distance learning experts, IT scholars and business leaders were among the 105 participants present at the two-day conference. |
