Brain and Mind Research Symposium 2006 University of Sydney will be hosting a research symposium on “Brain and Mind Research” from August 13 to 16, 2006. The aim of this symposium is to illuminate the scope of brain research in the Asia-Pacific region. Alongside the work of the Brain and Mind Research Institute of University of Sydney, brain researchers from various parts of the world will discuss specific plans to optimize brain research in the region at the research symposium. Post doctoral researchers are also invited to sign up for the symposium. Grants will be provided to support and encourage international research students and young researchers in this area of study. Interested participants are encouraged to register early to enjoy special rates. 7th APRU Fellows Program to Focus On Regional Security and Governance Based on the theme “Regional Security and Governance”, the 7th APRU Fellows Program (AFP) will be hosted by Australian National University (ANU) from August 16 to 25, 2006. Participants can expect to be engaged in stimulating discussions as well as visits to places such as the Australian Parliament House and ANU Coastal Research Station. Each member university can send up to two fellows to AFP 2006. To foster long-term collaboration, participating fellows are also encouraged to collaborate and submit relevant research papers for the APRU Collaborative Research Paper Award. Co-authors of the winning paper will share an award of US$6,000. 7th DLI Conference on Technology Enabled Knowledge Structuring University of Tokyo will be hosting the 7th Distance Learning and the Internet Conference (DLI) on “Technology Enabled Global Knowledge Structuring” from November 8 to 10, 2006. The six sub-themes of the conference are: · Mobile and ubiquitous learning · Open knowledge sharing · Virtual laboratories · Multi-lingual learning environment · Content development support · Technology trends |

In line with APRU’s mission to foster cooperation in education, research and enterprise, the newly established APRU World Institute (AWI) was endorsed at the Annual Presidents Meeting. AWI’s Governing Board Chairman is President of National University of Singapore and APRU Chairman Emeritus, Professor Shih Choon Fong while the institute’s Managing Director is Dr Richard Drobnick from University of Southern California, who is also Secretary General Emeritus of APRU. AWI aims to become a leading center for research excellence in interdisciplinary studies and policy-making. Its mission is to help create sustainable communities by studying various social-economic, scientific and environmental aspects of global transformations. It draws strength from APRU’s membership talent base and beyond to engage in research issues such as public health, environmental sustainability and economic integration. |

PECC-APRU Joint Education Study APRU and PECC would be collaborating on an education project entitled “The Asia Pacific Education Market”. The study would report on the evolution of the tertiary education supply chain, and make recommendations for education policy and business strategy initiatives. Conference for Chief Information Officers University of Southern California will be hosting the 1st APRU Chief Information Officers (CIO) Conference in California in early 2007 . With the objective of establishing a network of key Information Technology professionals and encouraging collaboration among APRU member universities, CIOs and senior IT professionals are encouraged to participate in this conference. |

University of Sydney Vice- Chancellor, Professor Gavin Brown AO has been elected Chair of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) at the APRU 10th Annual Presidents Meeting held in Sydney. Professor Brown takes over the leadership rein from Professor Shih Choon Fong, President of National University of Singapore. Professor Shih, having served two terms as APRU Chairman, was appointed Chairman Emeritus of APRU. Professor Brown takes office for a two-year term. |

Professor Brown is currently the President of Academic Consortium 21. He is also the former chair of the Group of Eight Universities. An active mathematical researcher, Professor Brown has been awarded the Sir Edmund Whittaker Memorial prize and the Australian Mathematical Society Medal for his work on Fourier analysis. |

The Governor of New South Wales, Her Excellency Marie Bashir AC hosted a welcome reception for participating university presidents at the Government House. The Honorable John Aquilina, Member of Parliament Speaker of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, hosted a welcome dinner at the Parliament for the university presidents and delegates. The meeting included a Forum on “The New Macro Environment of Higher Education: Redefining University-Industry Interfaces and Paradigm Shifts in Science and Technologies”. Eminent industry leaders from Samsung Electronics, Energy Cooperation of America, Peking University Founder Group and Merck Sharp and Dohme were invited to speak at the forum. The speakers engaged APRU university presidents in a lively exchange of topics from university-business ventures in China to biomedical innovation in pure and applied scientific research.
