Undergraduate Summer Program 2014

The 7th APRU Undergraduate Summer Program was hosted by Nanjing University (NJU) from 7 to 14 July at NJU's Gulou Campus.

A total of 43 students from 20 member universities participated in the 2014 program which was jointly organized by NJU's School of Social and Behavioral Sciences and the Office for International Cooperation and Exchanges. APRU Secretary General, Dr Christopher Tremewan and NJU Associate Vice President Pu Lijie were present at the USP and welcomed students during program's opening ceremony on 8 July.

The 1-week program featured lectures, workshops and discussions under the theme, "Developing Asia-Pacific Global Leaders: China's Perspectives". Lectures were given by distinguished NJU faculty and featured pertinent topics on cultural dynamics and transmission across generations, social structure, and international students' learning in China, among others. The speakers at the program were Professor Zhou Xiaohong, Dean of NJU's School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Professor Wu Yuxiao of the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences at NJU, Mr Zhu Xiaoyi, Vice-Dean of the Institute for International Students and Professor David Goodman, Academic Director of China Studies Centre at the University of Sydney.

Students engaged in workshops and small group discussions on various undergraduate study programs across APRU universities, benefits of international study experience and internships, scholarships, student life and challenges in undergraduate studies, adapting to new cultures, future career prospects and pathways for graduate studies, among others. Participants also discussed how universities shape its students in becoming responsible individuals and as future leaders.

On 11 and 12 July, students had the opportunity to learn about China's history and experience its rich culture through visits to key historical and cultural landmarks in Nanjing and Yangzhou. At the end of the USP, students reflected on their experience and lessons learned from the program through group presentations. To foster creativity, students were encouraged to present using their format of choice, e.g. cultural performances, role plays, formal presentations or other activities.
