The Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) proudly announces the inauguration of the APRU Orchestra, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at promoting international collaboration and cultural exchange through music within the academic community. This momentous event has taken place at Universiti Malaya in October 2025 at the APRU Annual Global Health Conference featuring the inaugural performance titled “A Symphony of Cultures – East Meets West.
A Vision Realized
The orchestra is inaugurated with a welcome speech from the Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Malaya, Professor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Noor Azuan Abu Osman, “This orchestra stands as a symbol of synergy and solidarity, reminding us that while we may come from distant shores — from Asia, the Americas, and Oceania — we share one rhythm, one purpose, and one humanity.” He further emphasized that “amid the pursuit of technological and scientific excellence, we must also protect and celebrate what makes us human: our empathy, our creativity, and our cultural spirit.” This sentiment encapsulates the essence of the APRU Orchestra and its mission to unite diverse cultures through the universal language of music.
The APRU Orchestra, conceptualized by Prof. Thomas Schneider, Chief Executive of APRU, represents a significant step toward uniting musicians from diverse backgrounds. “The efforts of Universiti Malaya in bringing this vision to life are commendable,” Schneider stated. “This orchestra embodies our commitment to fostering collaboration and creativity, showing how music can transcend borders and bring people together. The APRU orchestra seeks to harness the potential of music to strengthen cultural ties, enhance student and faculty engagement, and promote international exchanges among member institutions. By facilitating student mobility and faculty seminars, this initiative will cultivate a vibrant community of music students and educators dedicated to the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage through music.

A Commitment to Cultural Exchange
Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Mohd Nasir Hashim, the former dean of Faculty of Creative Arts at the Universiti Malaya, and also the conductor of the Orchestra, the orchestra aims to foster cultural exchange and enhance understanding among member institutions. Dr. Nasir expressed his enthusiasm for this initiative, stating, “My passion lies in building bridges through music. The APRU Orchestra not only enriches our artistic landscape but also highlights the value of collaboration among universities in the Asia-Pacific region. And together, we want to broaden music horizons for orchestra members and audience.”
Looking Forward
The inaugural performance featured a repertoire that celebrates the harmony of diverse musical traditions in Asia, showcasing how both Eastern and Western influences can coexist and thrive. The inaugurated concert also showcase how traditional music of Malaysia, with the use of traditional musical instruments.
Following this landmark event, the orchestra will continue its journey with a concert at the Annual Presidents’ Meeting at the University of the Philippines in June 2026; and its forthcoming APRU events.
