APRU Global Health Working Group Webinars: Teaching in Virtual Environments (Part II)

Innovation in Online Learning

Transitioning our courses online has provided opportunities for innovation.  Have you tried a new technology?  Created videos for a flipped classroom?  Discovered a new way to engage students in a difficult topic? Changed your content to respond to the realities of the pandemic?  In this session we will hear about online teaching innovations from APRU teaching experts.  Using the breakout rooms, we will then have time for discussion in small groups and return to the large room for the full group discussion.  Join us for this opportunity to learn from our network as we continue to adapt our courses to remote instruction.

Session I: Technology for Online Teaching

Date & Time:
November 12 at 6 pm (Pacific time)
November 13 at 10 am (Hong Kong time)

As faculty quickly transitioned to remote teaching early 2020, many tried new technologies to engage students online.  As we continue to design courses for online environments, how do we selectively choose technologies that best meet the learning needs of students.  In this session our faculty experts (Eleanor Vandegrift, University of Oregon and Julie Clarke, University of Melbourne) will share examples and research on implementation of technology to support remote teaching. During the session participants will have the opportunity to try out a couple of new technologies and consider how they might implement them in their own courses.

Session II: Equity and Access in Remote Teaching

Date & Time:
December 3 at 6 pm (Pacific time)
December 4 at 10 am (Hong Kong time)

Not all students have the same access to technology and internet connectivity. How can we teach and create equitable learning environments for our students when their access may vary widely? In this session our faculty experts (Eleanor Vandegrift, University of Oregon and Michael Antonio Mendoza, University of Philippines Manila) will share examples of mechanisms for creating equitable learning environments that address students’ technology needs.

Session III: Authentic Online Assessment

Date & Time:
January 21 at 6 pm (Pacific time)
January 22 at 10 am(Hong Kong time)

To respond to new realities of online learning, faculty continue to work on ways to develop assessments that measure student learning.  Today we will hear from APRU teaching experts (Mona Monfared, University of California, Davis and Fun Man Fung, National University of Singapore) who will share examples assessments they have used in large STEM classes.
