The New York Times-APRU Asia-Pacific Student Competition 2019 required students to write an 800-word policy brief to a leader in the Asia-Pacific region (government, philanthropy, business, NGO, etc.) discussing the threats to health from air pollution and to promote practical solutions. This booklet highlights the top-ten case submissions. Over one hundred students from 26 universities in 14 economies have submitted their entries. We wish to congratulate: the winning team of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Cherie Hiu Yu Leung and Veronica Qin Ting Li; the runners-up from the University of British Columbia, Candice Chan and Feifei Zhang; and, in third place, the team from Yale-NUS College, Ng Yi Ming, Lucy Kuo and Damon Lim Wei Da.

Themed “INSPIRE: Next generation of innovators”, this exciting 10-day program enabled students from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds to develop the skills to provide innovative solutions to real problems of global relevance while gaining new perspectives of co-creation in a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural context.

Due to the impact of COVID-19, the 8th edition of APRU-IRIDeS Multi-Hazards Summer School had to be held virtually. Through a zoom platform, three sessions were held on July 15, 22, and 29 (JST). The event aimed to share the experiences and lessons learned from the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami (GEJET), learn from the experiences in disaster risk reduction (DRR) and risk management from various stakeholders, and understand the latest international disaster science research conducted by the researchers globally. 842 people worldwide in total attended these sessions.
