Vice Presidents for Research Meeting 2017

The third annual APRU Vice Presidents for Research Meeting was convened held in the historic city of Nanjing.

 

Themed “Enhancing the Role of Universities in Fueling Innovation and Entrepreneurship”, the 3-day meeting was attended by over 40 research leaders and senior administrators from APRU universities and other higher education institutions including The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Israel Institute of Technology (TECHNION).

Featuring thematic presentations and panel discussion, the meeting discussed various models used by universities in encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship in different contexts. Sharing of best practices, and avid discussion of challenges faced provided participants with useful insights in formulating strategy ahead and open up opportunities for further collaborations.

Prof Pan Yi, Vice-President of Nanjing University kicked off the meeting by introducing the university’s exemplary cases in commercialization, innovation and entrepreneurship.
Mr Zhang Jianhua, Director of Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Education of People’s Republic of China provided a detailed account on “Innovation and Technology of Chinese Universities”
Prof Jim Metson, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) of The University of Auckland, discussed different national and international models of research collaboration.
Keynote address by Prof Wu Yueliang, Vice-President of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) points out the unique position and mission of UCAS to promote the nation’s innovation and technology and training of talents with its academic curriculum.

Panel discussion on “Fundamentals of promoting innovation and entrepreneurship in universities”. Their sharing illustrates how three research universities in different geographies strategize their policies in face of different ecosystem.

Prof Sandra Brown, Vice-Chancellor of University of California, San Diego, extended a warm welcome to all participants via a video to join next year’s meeting in the US.

The Fourth Vice Presidents for Research Meeting will be held from October 17 to 19, 2018 at the University of California, San Diego.
