Important Notice: Relocation for the 2026 APRU Annual Meetings

 

We announce that the APRU 30th Annual Presidents’ Meeting and the APRU Senior International Leaders’ Meeting will now be held in Hong Kong, hosted by The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).

While the University of the Philippines had made exceptional preparations to host these events in Manila, recent global developments affecting international travel led the Steering Committee to relocate the meetings to ensure seamless participation for our diverse member network. We extend our deepest gratitude to President Angelo Jimenez and the University of the Philippines for their professionalism and steadfast commitment to APRU.

Conference venue introduction

 

The CUHK Medical Centre (CUHKMC), a not-for-profit, private teaching hospital wholly owned by CUHK, commenced operations in January 2021 to provide quality, reliable and transparent healthcare services to the public. It operates with a social mission to bridge the service gap between the private and public healthcare systems in Hong Kong. Any surpluses generated will be reinvested in the hospital’s operations to support future development and to advance the CUHK Faculty of Medicine’s research and teaching agenda.

As Hong Kong’s first smart hospital, CUHKMC marks a new chapter in the city’s medical services by harnessing technology to advance clinical care. By placing the patient at the heart of care, CUHKMC is home to world-class equipment and facilities. It has introduced innovative procedures utilising digital technologies and the best clinical expertise to deliver on its mission to provide “pioneering solutions in healthcare”.

The APRU APM and SILM 2026 will be held at the conference facilities of the CUHKMC. The venue is designed to support mid-scale meetings, with modern facilities and well-designed spaces.

Taxi
A taxi from Hong Kong International Airport to Hyatt Regency Hong Kong, Sha Tin is available on demand and is typically the most direct option. The journey takes about 30 to 35 minutes, with fares commonly around HK$300 to HK$400.

Take the Airport Express Railway to Tsing Yi Station (Time: Approximately 15 minutes; Fee: HK$70), then followed by taxi to the hotel (Tsing Yi Station to the hotel: Approximately 20 minutes).

Visa

 

Nationals of most countries do not require a visa to enter the Hong Kong for tourism and may stay for periods ranging from seven to 180 days, depending on the nationality. For detailed visa requirements for different countries and territories, please refer to the Immigration Department webpage.

Speakers
Professor Thomas SCHNEIDER
Chief Executive, APRU

Professor Schneider was elected as APRU’s 5th Chief Executive and took up the role from Janurary 2023.

A native of Germany, Professor Schneider studied at the University of Zurich, the University of Basel and the École Pratique des Hautes Études in Paris. He earned his degrees in Egyptology from the University of Basel. Throughout his career, he has held academic and administrative positions in four global regions – North America; Asia; Europe; the Middle East.

Throughout the years, Professor Schneider has acquired significant leadership experience at the departmental level (Acting Department Chair; Director of Graduate Studies; Chair of Egyptology) and university level (Senator on the UBC Senate, 2014-8). He oversaw specific strategic projects and initiatives as Special Advisor to the Vice-Provost and Dean, Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies, at UBC (2015-7) and as Advisor to the President at Quest University Canada (2016-17).

From 2018-20, Professor Schneider served the Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen, China’s fastest-rising new STEM university, as Associate Vice President (International), spearheading its internationalization efforts. Recently, Professor Schneider has founded PALAC – a new consortium of liberal arts colleges focused on experimental learning in the liberal arts across multiple economies in Asia and North America.

Professor Schneider has acquired a broad knowledge of the spectrum of disciplines. He has been a consultant, adjudicator and reviewer for universities, funding agencies and publishers in North America, China, Europe, Israel, and Australia, as well as an executive editor of academic periodicals. His own scholarship focuses on cultural and linguistic interconnections in the Near East, the environmental history of Egypt, and the history of the humanities in Nazi Germany.

Josh Yiu
Director, Art Museum, The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Josh Yiu is the Director of the Art Museum at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). He also serves as an advisor to the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and a mentor in the Hong Kong NGO Governance Programme. He received his BA in Art History from the University of Chicago, and completed his doctorate at the University of Oxford. He was the Foster Foundation Curator of Chinese Art at the Seattle Art Museum before serving in Hong Kong. A scholar in late imperial and modern Chinese art, he has diversified the museum’s collection and its art education programmes. He led the CUHK Art Museum to win the ICOM-UMAC Award in 2022. He also masterminded the museum’s expansion project, Lo Kwee Seong Pavilion, now a new cultural landmark in Hong Kong, which received the Medal of the Year of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects Awards 2025.

Professor Joanna REGULSKA
Vice Provost and Dean, Global Affairs, University of California, Davis

Joanna Regulska, vice provost and dean of Global Affairs and distinguished professor of gender, sexuality and women’s studies at the University of California, Davis, has led large-scale programs that transform institutions, establish partnerships, and substantially improve global services for over 30 years.

Regulska oversees Global Affairs at UC Davis where she strives to provide all students with global learning experiences through the Provost’s Priority of Global Education for All. She also engages faculty, staff and students with the UN Sustainable Development Goals as part of UC Davis’ commitment to solving global challenges; and promotes understanding while addressing global inequities.

In 2022, Regulska was honored with the Charles Klasek Award for outstanding service to the field of international higher education from the Association of International Education Administrators. A respected scholar, Regulska’s research concentrates on women’s political activism, grassroots mobilization, decentralization, democracy and democratization, with a focus on Europe and the Caucasus.

Professor YongHee Kim
Vice President for International Affairs, Pusan National University

Professor YongHee Kim is Professor of Marketing at Pusan National University (PNU), Republic of Korea, and currently serves as Vice President for International Affairs, leading the university’s global engagement and international cooperation initiatives. Previously, she served as Dean of the Language Education Institute and Associate Dean of the College of Business at PNU. She received her PhD in Hospitality Management from The Pennsylvania State University and previously served on the faculty of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the College of Southern Nevada. Her research and teaching interests include marketing strategy, services marketing, and digital marketing. Professor Kim also serves as Director of the BK21 Four Education and Research Group in Digital Finance and Executive Director of the Korean Marketing Management Association. Her academic and administrative work focuses on advancing international collaboration, innovative business education, and research in digital business environments.

Dr. Abdul Hanif MAHADI
Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Sustainability), Universiti Brunei Darussalam

Dr. Abdul Hanif Mahadi is the Assistant Vice Chancellor (Research, Innovation and Sustainability) of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD). His role involves leading and developing research and innovation strategy, and also promoting sustainability initiatives of the university. Previously, Dr. Hanif was the Director of Centre of Advanced Material and Energy Sciences (CAMES), UBD where he was spearheading the research centre for developing technologies and scientific expertise for green energy with innovative advanced materials. Dr. Hanif’s primary research area focuses on the utilisation of carbon dioxide to valuable products and sustainable production and storage of hydrogen energy. He started this research interest since his PhD studies in Chemistry at Wolfson Catalysis Centre, University of Oxford. To date, Dr. Hanif has published numerous high-impact publications in his research field, including patents. He is also an advocate for Science, innovation and sustainability development within Brunei’s youth, where he provides lectures and supervision to nurture their scientific thinking and skills.

Dr. Adalberto Noyola
Head of the Center of Mexican Studies UNAM-BFSU (Beijing); Senior Researcher at Institute of Engineering, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México

Adalberto Noyola is an environmental engineer with a PhD in wastewater treatment engineering from INSA Toulouse, France. He is a senior researcher and former Head of the Institute of Engineering (2008-2016) at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM); he is a member of the National System of Researchers (3, highest level).

His work has focused on developing research for providing innovative solutions for wastewater and sludge treatment by biological processes. As a result, he developed 5 patents, 2 of them transferred and in application, and published 73 research papers in leading scientific journals (JCR), being cited 3265 and 4754 times (Scopus and Google Scholar, respectively). He has been the supervisor of 56 undergraduates, 33 master and 12 PhD students.

Dr. Ahmad EZZEDDINE
Vice Provost for Global Affairs, University of Washington

Dr. Ahmad Ezzeddine leads UW Global at the University of Washington (UW), following a distinguished career at Wayne State University, and is responsible for the University’s global strategy and engagement efforts. This includes collaborating with university partners to develop and deploy a cohesive vision for UW’s global engagement, and enhancing and expanding the university’s global programs, partnerships, and global learning initiatives. Recognized for his contributions to the international education field, Dr. Ezzeddine was named Senior International Officer of the Year for 2022 by the Institute of International Education. In addition to serving on the executive committee of the Association of Public and Land Grant Universities’ Commission on Economic and Community Engagement, he was the former chair of the board of directors for ACCESS: Arab Community Center for Economic and Social Services, and is the current president of NAFSA: the Association of International Educators.

Professor Sunmee CHOI
Vice Provost for External Engagement Vi,nUniversity

Professor Sunmee Choi is the Vice Provost for External Engagement at VinUniversity, where she leads global partnerships, industry engagement, and advancement initiatives to strengthen the university’s international reputation. She previously served as the Founding Dean of the College of Business & Management.

She is on leave from Yonsei University, where she is a Professor of Service Operations Management at the School of Business. Her academic work focuses on service operations, revenue management, and customer experience, with teaching areas including production and operations management and service management.

Professor Choi has held senior leadership roles at Yonsei, including Vice President for International Affairs and Associate Dean, and has extensive international teaching experience, including long-term engagement with ESSEC Business School in France.

She serves SK Chemical as an Outside Director of the Board since 2024. She is also a Fellow of the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia.

She holds a B.S. from Yonsei University and a M.S and Ph.D. from Cornell University.

Professor LEE Pooi See
Vice President (International Engagement); President’s Chair in Materials Science & Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore

Prof. Pooi See LEE is the President’s Chair Professor in Materials Science & Engineering at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU, SG).

Her current research focuses on stretchable elastomeric composites for electronics and energy devices, human-machine interface, sensors and actuators and soft robotics and healthtech. Professor Lee received the Nanyang Research Award in 2016 and the Nanyang Award for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Award in 2018. She was awarded the NRF Investigatorship, Class of 2016. Her research outcomes have led to her being listed as a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate Analytics in 2018-2025. She was elected the National Academy of Inventors Fellow in 2020, MRS Fellow 2022 and RSC Fellow 2022. She won the SNIC – AsCA2019 Distinguished Woman Chemist Award 2022. She is the Senior Editor of ACS Energy Letters and serves on the editorial advisory board for several journals. She served as the Associate Provost (Graduate Education) and Dean of the Graduate College at NTU, SG from 2020 to 2023, before her current appointment as the Vice President (International Engagement).

Dr. Lorraine Pe SYMACO
Vice President of Academic Affairs, University of the Philippines

Lorraine Pe Symaco assumed the position of Vice President of Academic Affairs at the University of the Philippines in August 2025. Prior to this appointment, she served as a professor at Zhejiang University, China, and was the founding director of the Centre for Research in International and Comparative Education (CRICE) and UNESCO Chair in International and Comparative Educational Research at the University of Malaya, Malaysia.

Dr. Symaco completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of the Philippines and earned her Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) from the University of Oxford. Her research interests are international education development and higher education. She is Editor of the Journal of International and Comparative Education (JICE) and Series Editor of Education in Southeast Asia (Routledge).

As Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Symaco is responsible for leading the development and implementation of university-wide policies on teaching and learning, faculty and student development and services, research, internationalization, admissions, and the oversight of the University Press.

Professor Jessica GALLAGHER
Deputy Vice Chancellor - International and External Engagement, Adelaide University

As Deputy Vice Chancellor International and External Engagement at Australia’s new Group of Eight university, Professor Gallagher leads a diverse portfolio responsible for leading the strategy and delivery of Adelaide University’s global presence and impact through purposeful partnerships, recruitment, participation and outreach, community and government relations, marketing and communications, alumni engagement, and internationalisation activities.

Professor Gallagher has a PhD in Comparative Cultural Studies from the University of Queensland and holds a board position at Multicultural Australia. She is also recognised within the higher education sector for giving a voice to where mainstream and minorities intersect. She has steered the establishment of scholarships and partnerships that support students from Delhi slums, created new opportunities for refugees and those with a humanitarian disadvantage, and has driven the expansion of female founder and leadership initiatives.

Professor Sau Kim LUM
Associate Vice President (Global Relations), National University of Singapore

Associate Professor Sau Kim Lum joined the NUS Global Relations Office (NUS Global) as Academic Director in mid-2021 and was appointed Associate Vice President (Global Relations) in September 2023. Prior to this, Sau Kim was Assistant Dean at the former School of Design and Environment handling development, outreach and communications. Currently, she is also a Resident Fellow at Ridge View Residential College.

Sau Kim teaches real estate finance and securitisation as a faculty member of the NUS Business School and is a winner of several teaching awards. Her research interests cover the areas of housing and land policy, index construction and green finance. She developed the official suite of price indices for the Singapore private and public housing sectors as well as the NUS Singapore Residential Price Index. She has also consulted extensively for various Singapore and international organisations on urban policy, planning and regulations, deal underwriting and real estate strategy. She sits on the Land Acquisition Appeals Board of the Ministry of Law.

Professor Angela NG, PhD
Assistant Vice-President for Institutional Advancement (Global Engagement); Adjunct Professor of Finance, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

Prof. Angela Ng is the Assistant Vice-President for Institutional Advancement (Global Engagement) at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), where she leads the university’s global engagement efforts, strengthens strategic partnerships, and advances HKUST’s presence and impact across education, research, and innovation.

With over two decades of experience in higher education, Prof. Ng has a proven track record in international engagement, institutional strategy, and academic development. At HKUST Business School, she spearheaded global initiatives, including co-founding the World Bachelor in Business – a pioneering tri-continental undergraduate program in collaboration with USC and Bocconi University. She also led university-wide undergraduate recruitment and admissions initiatives.

Before rejoining HKUST, she served as Associate Dean at CUHK Business School and later as Academic Dean at the Hong Kong Management Association.

Prof. Ng holds a PhD in Economics from Stanford University and a BSc in Econometrics and Mathematical Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Dr. Tamara CUNNINGHAM
Associate Vice Chancellor for Global Initiatives, UC San Diego

Tamara Cunningham is the inaugural Associate Vice Chancellor for Global Initiatives, ArtsConnect, and Activation at the University of California San Diego, where she leads the university’s strategic internationalization agenda and advances UC San Diego’s vision as a premier destination for arts, culture, innovation, and global engagement.

With more than 25 years of leadership experience in higher education, Dr. Cunningham is a strategic thought partner and executive leader who champions equitable global education, international student mobility, high-impact academic and research partnerships, and the cultivation of an ecosystem that positions the arts as a core pillar of campus life and engagement.

Dr. Cunningham holds a Doctor of Education in Higher Education Leadership from Saint Peter’s University and a master’s degree in Communication and Information Studies from Rutgers University.

Professor Michael Lazzara
Associate Vice Provost of Academic Programs and Partnerships, University of California, Davis

Michael Lazzara is Associate Vice Provost of Academic Programs and Partnerships in Global Affairs and Professor of Latin American Literature and Cultural Studies at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis). He advances global engagement via strategic partnerships, professional programs, and faculty collaborations; contributes to the enhancement of global education; and oversees the UC Davis Chile Life Sciences Innovation Center. He regularly represents UC Davis in global forums, galvanizing international research and educational opportunities, and is a long-time study abroad instructor himself. Holding a PhD from Princeton University, Lazzara has authored 11 books, edited volumes, and book-length translations, along with over 60 academic articles and chapters. His research focuses on memory, trauma, and human rights in Latin America.

Assoc. Prof. Palanee AMMARANOND, PhD
Vice President, Chulalongkorn University

Associate Professor Palanee Ammaranond, PhD earned a BSc in Medical Technology from Chulalongkorn University in 1992, an MSc in Biotechnology from Mahidol University in 1995, and a PhD in Immunology from the University of New South Wales, Australia in 2005.

Since she joined the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences at Chulalongkorn University, she has served in various capacities, including Deputy Dean for Research Affairs and Head of the Department of Blood Transfusion and Clinical Microbiology. In 2016, her tenure at the Faculty has been marked by her ascent to the role of Dean.

Associate Professor Palanee Ammaranond, PhD has been a board member of significant organizations, including the Association of Medical Technologists of Thailand (AAMT) and the Asia Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (AAMLS). She has also served as President of Thailand Advisory Board of International American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCPi) and the ASEAN Association for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (AACLS).

Her expertise in HIV-specific laboratories earned her prestigious awards and scholarships, including an Excellent PhD Thesis Award 2008 (First Prize), an Australian Development Scholarship, and a Royal Thai Government Scholarship.

In May 2024, she was appointed Vice President to promote Chulalongkorn University’s global presence and to strengthen academic and research collaborations.

Professor Sang Kee Song
Vice President, International Affairs, Korea University

Sang Kee Song graduated from Korea University and earned MA and PhD at Yale University. And he teaches Latin American Literature and Thoughts at Dept. of Spanish Language & Literature at Korea University.

He was Visiting Scholar at Colegio de México and University of California at San Diego and Director of Institute of Hispanic Studies at Korea University. He wrote many articles on Latin American Literature and Culture at Major Journals including Revista Iberoamericana. Recently he researches on Baroque Ethos as alternative discourse of Modernity and Communitarian Liberalism in Latin America.

As Vice President for International Affairs, he oversees a number of teams and units responsible for institutional and network cooperation, student mobility, international student recruitment, international summer and winter sessions and global leadership training programs.

Professor Mayumi MOCHIZUKI
Associate Professor, Institute for International Initiatives, The University of Osaka

Mayumi Mochizuki is an Associate Professor at the Institute for International Initiatives, The University of Osaka, specializing in consortium management, international strategic planning, and data analysis. After earning her PhD in the field of bioscience, she developed a diverse career spanning both research and academic administration across Japan, the United States, and Europe. Throughout her career, she has contributed to university-level management by coordinating large-scale research initiatives, supporting international researchers, and fostering global partnerships.

Since joining The University of Osaka, she has worked as a University Research Administrator, contributing to research strategy development and the promotion of international collaboration. In recent years, her work has focused on international consortium management, partnership development, and the analysis and visualization of data on international activities and collaborations to support institutional planning and decision-making.

Dr. Xiaoxin “Ivy” Mu
Acting Chief Global Officer, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa

Dr. Xiaoxin “Ivy” Mu is serving as the Acting Chief Global Officer at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, where she supports international initiatives, partnerships, and institutional collaborations. Her work advances the university’s global engagement strategy through international agreements, academic partnerships, student mobility, and transnational education initiatives. Dr. Mu is a scholar in international education policy, international student mobility, and student services. She has been a strong advocate for international student and scholar services, well-being, and success, and is committed to fostering inclusive and supportive environments for global learners and researchers. She works closely with university leadership, faculty, and international partners to strengthen collaborations across Asia, the Pacific, and beyond. Her professional experience includes international higher education administration, policy development, compliance coordination, strategic partnership management, and global program operations.

Ms. Cheryl DUMARESQ
Executive Director, Global Engagement, The University of British Columbia

Cheryl Dumaresq serves as Executive Director, Global Engagement at The University of British Columbia. As UBC’s Senior International Officer, she represents the university on Canada’s U15 International Leadership Committee and global networks such as the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU).

In her role, Cheryl oversees UBC’s Office of Global Engagement, which includes student mobility programs, international partnerships, and the university’s satellite offices in Hong Kong and Delhi. She brings extensive leadership experience across international education, student services, academic advising, student recruitment and marketing, as well as institutional research and analysis.

Cheryl holds a Master of Arts in Higher Education from UBC. She is currently completing an EdD in Educational Leadership at Western University, where she is exploring how to increase participation in study abroad programs. In 2020, she was awarded the President’s Service Award for Excellence, the University’s highest award for staff. Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family, including her three young adult daughters who are navigating university life.
