Reconnecting to Shape Our Common Future

About the meeting

The APRU Senior International Leaders’ Meeting 2022 will be hosted by the University of California, Riverside from 17-19 October.

Following the Annual Presidents’ Meeting at NTU-Singapore in July, this meeting is an opportunity for senior international leaders to reflect on their international strategies and on APRU’s work in the context of the “new normal”.

What has changed? What are the challenges? How can we obtain the most value from the APRU network?

The gradual lifting of travel restrictions has enabled some international travel but we are unlikely to return to previous travel patterns. Geopolitical issues, economic instability, deepening inequality and worsening climate extremes have also intervened.

The international higher education landscape is fluid and uncertain.

Yet universities have agency so how can we act together to shape a common future for the common good?

The objective of the meeting is to give senior international leaders the opportunity to discuss issues of importance to them with their peers. The whole meeting is designed for dialogue and participants will have time for informal networking.

Colleagues who are unable to join the meeting in-person can join the session held on 18 October, 1630-1800 (PDT)/19 October, 0730-0900 (HKT) virtually.

Discussion – Shaping the Landscape of International Higher Education

University leaders share their perspectives on how the international higher education landscape has shifted and how APRU universities can shape the new normal as separate institutions and as a network. What did we learn from the past few years? What are we doing now? What new ideas can we share? How do we understand the future?

Discussion – Global Learning and Student International Activities in the New Normal (livestreamed via Zoom)

International learning for students has extended beyond exchanges and study abroad to ‘internationalisation at home’, an emphasis on SDGs and global challenges, diversity and inclusion, and also virtual learning and exchange prompted by the pandemic limits on travel.

Where should our emphasis be as institutions and as a very diverse network? What should we be doing differently post-pandemic? Are there new ideas for collaboration? Post-pandemic, what considerations for student welfare need to be taken into account? How does a more polarised international environment affect us in education and research? How can we continue to develop trust and cooperation for the benefit of students and our societies?

Discussion – Scaling Up Initiatives on Global Challenges

Member universities are working hard on global challenges. APRU has many programs which are performing well. But is this the right strategy? Are we scaling up for impact or should we be satisfied with current scale and speed? Or should we incubate, stabilize and spin-off? Proposals for a network of networks has its attractions but how to do it effectively so that there is more action not less? How crucial are links to international organizations, external partnerships and funding for a more effective strategy? How do we deliver these relationships?

11:45 - 1:30 p.m.

Working Lunch – Shaping the Network for Impact

The APRU network has transformed substantially in the past few years. From the growing number of members, launching of new initiatives, research programs and activities, to creating a stronger and specialized team at the Secretariat, we are acquiring more capacity. How can member universities and the International Secretariat relate more effectively to each other to achieve our goals?
