Join this interactive session to hear first-hand the lessons that universities have drawn from hosting co-curricular courses in the APRU Virtual Student Exchange program.
APRU universities came together in August 2020 to launch the APRU Virtual Student Exchange Program, led by the Chinese University of Hong Kong with a unique proposition: co-curricular activities which focus on cultural, leadership, career, and social aspects of study abroad experiences in virtual delivery. As we continue to shape the program and enhance our offerings, let us share and learn from each other.
In this webinar, case study presentations from 5 universities (Korea University, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Tohoku University, Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ), and University of California, Davis) will provide lessons on running engaging co-curricular programs. University presenters will also facilitate breakout groups to have discussion with participants on one category of co-curricular program (Cultural, Leadership, Career, Social).

Professor Wong Suk-Ying is currently the Associate Vice-President, Professor of Sociology and Director of the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Professor Wong received her undergraduate training at the University of Liverpool (UK) and obtained her PhD from Stanford University (USA). She has been on the teaching faculty at other higher education institutions in the United States and Japan before joining CUHK. Her teaching and research profession began with a Spencer Post-doctoral Fellowship award from the US National Academy of Education and a named Distinguished Junior Research Fellow by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. She has received major research grants from the Research Grant Council, Hong Kong SAR and the Bilateral Hong Kong RGC-UK Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC).
Professor Wong’s primary research expertise involve the sociology of education, organisations and higher education. She is also a recipient of the CUHK Faculty of Social Science Exemplary Teaching Award (2004) and the Vice-Chancellor’s Exemplary Teaching Award (2005).
Besides her notable achievements in research and teaching, Professor Wong also possesses extensive experience in university administration. She was the Associate Dean of the Faculty of Social Science of CUHK (2008-2013), the Founding Dean of Students of CW Chu College (2012-2016), and has been the University Director of Admissions and Financial Aid since 2013.
Professor Wong also demonstrates an active record of community service both at home and abroad. Currently, she serves as member of the Board of Management, Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS), Subject Specialist for the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications, and former Co-President of the Comparative Education Society of Asia. By invitation, Professor Wong was Honorary Guest Professor with the School of Ethnology and Sociology, Minzu University of China (2005).
Mr. Seung Hyun Yang is Manager of Study Abroad Programs at Korea University. Mr. Yang currently manages over 160 active partnerships, his current priorities include the university’s strategic engagement to develop innovative programs. He is also a regular visitor to Europe, covering the university’s study abroad programs. Each semester, over 45% of Korea University students choose European universities as their exchange studies destination.
Prof. Rumi Watanabe is an associate professor at the Global Learning Center at Tohoku University managing the international affairs for incoming students. She has extensive experience in modeling the cultural experience for international students as well as planning the international strategy in the higher education sector in Japan.
Prof. Watanabe received her Doctor of Arts at Kobe University specializing in intercultural education and international education. Outside the academia, she actively serves at the advisory boards relating to internationalization matters. She currently holds memberships at the Japan Association for International Student Education (JAISE) and the Intercultural Education Society of Japan. She is also the Internationalization Expert Advisor for the Sendai Tourism, Convention and International Association. In 2015, Prof. Watanabe received the Incentive Award from the Japan Association for International Student Education (JAISE), acknowledging her proactive engagement in promoting global education experience.
Kiya Okhlopkova is in her third year of the PhD program at the Innovative Japanese Studies Department of Tohoku University. Originally born in Yakutsk, Russia, in 2014 she graduated from M.K.Ammosov North-Eastern Federal University with a specialist degree in Japanese language and literature. In 2015 with the support of MEXT scholarship, Kiya moved to Sendai city in Japan as a research student at the Department of Japanese literature of Tohoku University. In 2019 she received a Master degree in Japanese literature from Tohoku University Graduate School of Arts and Letters. During her student years, Kiya got involved in many intercultural exchange activities, such as:
A Coordinator of the “Coffee Hour” language exchange program and the “D-Project” English debates club at Tohoku University International Oasis in 2015-2016, a Tohoku Ambassador of tourism at Sendai TV “Go Go Tohoku!” program in 2016-2018, a representative of Tohoku University at Waku Waku Japan educational program “Study in Japan #05 Catch your dream!” in 2018, an international student member of SENTIA (Sendai Tourism, Convention and International Association) in 2016-2018, a Translation/simultaneous interpretation team leader at TEDxTohokuUniversity in 2016-2017, a president of TUFSA (Tohoku University Foreign Students Association) in 2018-2019, and a member of International students support team at Tohoku University library in 2017-2021.
Currently Kiya is an Instructor of Japanese culture of the TUJP program at Global Learning Center of Tohoku University and she prepares fun engaging classes about Japanese yōkai (supernatural creatures from Japanese folklore).
Elena Fabbretti is a second-year Ph.D. student from Innovative Japanese Studies Department at Tohoku University with the support of Mext Scholarship. After receiving her B.A. and Master degree in Japanese Language and Culture at Rome La Sapienza University, she moved to Sendai where she is also joining the Sendai Tourism Convention and International Association as a foreign student. She is passionate about intercultural exchanges and in Tujp program she gives lectures about Japanese Ukiyo-e prints and their influence on Western arts.
Grace is the Lead Instructor of many of the extremely popular career development programs in HKUST. As a professional trainer specializing in personal growth, she promotes care, commitment, creativity and integrity. Her career goal is to help you achieve yours. Her passion is helping and inspiring students to discover and become who they are.
Her corporate background includes over 18 years of experience in Human Resources and Business Management. She began her career as an Executive Trainee in Hong Kong, she progressed to Senior Human Resources Manager and later to the Head of Operations of a container terminal in China.
Grace has an Honors Bachelor of Arts Degree in Applied Linguistics and a Masters Degree in Business Administration, majoring in Human Resources Management. She is also a trained ‘Results Coach’ specializing in life and career coaching, and the career columnist for CosmoGirl! and Cosmo Campus magazines.
Mateo Saenz (MSc King’s College London) works as Director of International Affairs. He oversees international university relations, including study abroad, virtual initiatives, and faculty-led programs in the Galapagos and continental Ecuador. Mateo is also a lecturer at the College of Social Sciences and Humanities, where he teaches a class focusing on Ecuador’s social reality. As for extracurricular activities, Mateo is a Rotaract member leading initiatives in Ecuador related to the EndPlasticSoup project. He is also co-founder of Liter of Light Ecuador, an organization that promotes solar energy use, and Cuéntame, a grassroots initiative that provides mental health assistance.
Kimberly works within UC Davis Global Affairs as an Intercultural Programs Coordinator. She is passionate about creating programs that help students make connections and see the world through a globally aware lens. Prior to joining UC Davis, Kimberly coordinated short term faculty-led study abroad programs at Arizona State University, and before that she designed and facilitated programs at a peace and reconciliation centre in Northern Ireland. She has also worked for a member of the House of Representatives in Washington, DC and taught English in Chile. She graduated from UC Davis with a BA in International Relations and minor in Spanish and has a MA in International Education Management from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey.
Janice Tse is an Intercultural Programs Coordinator with the Global Learning Hub, a part of UC Davis Global Affairs. She graduated with a Masters in Higher Education Administration from the University of Michigan, and received her B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, double-majoring in Asian Studies and Peace, War, and Defense. Her work at UC Davis involves creating programming for students with a concentration on global and intercultural learning and engagement. In her free time she enjoys travelling, and has currently been to 20 countries, including living and working abroad for 3 years in Ethiopia and China.
Ms. Shally Fan is Director of Academic Links at CUHK. Ms. Fan promotes and supports the University’s internationalization strategy in research and education with a view to strengthening its impact and visibility on the global stage, and enriching the international exposure and inter-cultural experience of students. She oversees all aspect of the internationalization at the University, including teaching and research partnerships, strategic alliances and networks, collaborative agreements, as well as student and faculty mobility, among other programmes and initiatives.
Ms. Fan received her BA from the University of Adelaide and MCom from the University of South Australia. She joined the Office of Academic Links at CUHK in 2001 to manage the University’s student exchange programmes. Since then, she has played a key role in developing CUHK’s international partnership network, which now include partnerships with over 360 institutions in more than 35 countries/regions.
Ms. Jackie Agnello Wong is the APRU Director (Network Programs). With over 16 years of working in the higher education sector and policy, Wong is dedicated to informing international public policy making through education, research, and partnership. Prior to joining the APRU Secretariat, she launched the first-ever Global Master of Public Policy, a joint executive degree with The University of Hong Kong and the University of Southern California as the Director for Marketing and Recruitment. Prior to this role she served at the Program for Environmental and Regional Equity (PERE) and the Center for the Study of Immigrant Integration (CSII), research centers at the University of Southern California.
She has organized large-scale discussions on environmental justice, immigrant integration, and regional equity, featuring speakers such as: Secretary Hillary Clinton, Connie Rice, Bob Moses, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Geoffrey Canada, and many others. She has also participated in the Rockwood Art of Leadership program and the Liberty Hill Commissions training program which led her to serve as a commissioner for the Los Angeles County Quality and Productivity Commission. She has a Master of Public Administration from University of Southern California and holds a B.A. in Sociology from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
