Themed “Preventing the Next Pandemic – The Global Partnership Agenda for Governments, Business, and Research Universities”, this side meeting of the APEC CEO Summit 2022 in Bangkok brought together over a hundred university leaders, policymakers, and entrepreneurs around the globe for a high-level dialogue last November. Speakers shared at the full day meeting their visions of increasing global resilience, promoting international cooperation, and developing future-proof strategies to prepare for another pandemic.

The inaugural APEC University Leaders’ Forum brought university Presidents to join business leaders and policymakers to tackle critical skills shortage in Data Science & Analytics (DSA) and support regional competitiveness in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The Forum Report of the APEC University Leaders’ Forum 2023 captures the highlights of the Forum. Taking place alongside the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit, AULF 2023 brought together over 100 leaders for a high-level dialogue between CEOs, policy leaders, presidents, and top researchers from government agencies, universities, research centers, international NGOs, and civil society to collaborate on developing and disseminating innovative, sustainable solutions to biodiversity loss.

Overview The APEC University Leaders’ Forum, organized by the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) and the University of Chile, convenes presidents of the leading Asia-Pacific research universities together with leaders from major global corporations and government to share insights and discuss the critical issues of the region alongside the 2019 APEC Chile CEO Summit. The Forum theme was ‘Women in Digital Society’ drawn from the overarching theme for APEC Chile 2019. More specifically, it was to discuss the role of women, new opportunities for leadership and the predicted impact of technological developments on gender and society within the region.

APEC University Leaders Forum 2025: Harnessing AI for Inclusive Higher Education Across the Asia-Pacific AI is reshaping work, transforming economies, and emerging as a powerful tool for tackling urgent societal challenges—from climate change and healthcare to education equity and digital inclusion. At the same time, it brings new complexities, requiring thoughtful responses to ethical, social, and workforce-related impacts. For universities, understanding AI’s transformative potential is critical—not just to keep pace with technological change, but to actively contribute to solving complex global challenges. By embracing AI, institutions can lead in building a more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient future. This means rethinking teaching, research, and community engagement to ensure students are prepared to thrive in—and shape—the AI-driven world. To explore these themes, APRU and Pusan National University hosted the APEC University Leaders’ Forum (AULF) 2025 on May 12–13 at Jeju Island, Korea, alongside the APEC Education Ministers Meeting. The forum gathered nearly 100 participants, including 28 speakers from 40+ institutions across 13 APEC economies. Policy leaders, university presidents, AI experts, and multilateral representatives engaged in dynamic dialogue on AI’s impact on education and society in the Pacific Rim. Key topics included: Leveraging AI to address regional challenges Expanding access to education and bridging digital divides Preparing students and up-skilling the workforce for the future of work Navigating ethical dilemmas and institutional adaptation Through initiatives like AULF, APRU continues to champion global collaboration in higher education—advancing research, innovating teaching, and driving meaningful engagement to harness AI’s potential for positive change across the Pacific Rim and beyond.
