Innovating Forest Futures Across the Asia-Pacific
Asia-Pacific forests are among the most biodiverse and ecologically significant, playing a vital role in global climate regulation, carbon sequestration, and in sustaining millions of livelihoods. Yet rapid economic and population growth are accelerating deforestation, land degradation, and biodiversity loss. This demands a coordinated, science-based approach to forest management that balances conservation with human development and climate resilience.
FELLI is a pioneering effort to establish a network of forest ecosystem living labs across APRU universities—open innovation ecosystems where research is co-developed, tested, and refined in real-world settings. Led by the University of British Columbia and Universidad San Francisco de Quito, FELLI fosters collaborative research, student engagement, and policy advisory work. The initiative is built around three key pillars:
Living Lab – A collaborative platform for data collection and comparative studies across diverse forest ecosystems, driving innovation in forest science.
Education – A unified forestry course promoting experiential learning and cross-cultural exchange among future forestry leaders.
Knowledge Exchange and Policy Development – Informing forest conservation and restoration policies by spotlighting biodiversity challenges and translating research into actionable strategies.
