Protecting Ecosystems Through Collaboration
The Asia-Pacific harbors the richest marine ecosystems, longest coral reefs, and over half of remaining mangroves. These systems support 20% of global species and regulate climate, food systems, disease resilience. Yet, biodiversity in Asia is declining fast, driven by rapid development and climate stress. With many endemic species at risk, reversing biodiversity loss is not only urgent for the region, but also pivotal to global sustainability. In a region shaped by rapid migration and geopolitical complexity, biodiversity conservation also offers a rare unifying agenda.
The APRU Biodiversity and Sustainability Program creates a dynamic platform for research-informed, cross-sector collaboration, generating new knowledge to guide technological interventions and improve stewardship of our shared natural heritage. Led by The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the program advances biodiversity efforts through initiatives such as:
APRU’s Annual Biodiversity Conferences convene experts across disciplines to share scientific breakthroughs, innovative strategies, and actionable solutions for protecting biodiversity and promoting its sustainable use.
Webinar Series foster dialogue among diverse stakeholders. The 2024 Biodiversity for Sustainable Cities series addressed biodiversity loss in urban settings and explored ways to harmonize development with conservation.
Partnering for the Pacific showcases exemplary interdisciplinary approaches to conservation, emphasizing collaboration and real-world impact.
