APRU Biodiversity x CUHK SURP

Students from APRU member universities are invited to learn more about biodiversity by taking part in the Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) to engage in research projects under the supervision of academics from the School of Life Sciences at CUHK. This year, a total of 16 research projects studying different kinds of life, ranging from animals, plants, and microorganisms that make up our natural world are offered by SURP. Students will gain three credits upon completion of the program. 

A series of learning enrichment activities such as genomics sequencing workshops and field trips to explore the ecosystem will be tailored for students enrolled in these projects. In addition, they can take part in a host of fun-filled cultural and social activities to explore Hong Kong culture and network with their peers from around the world.

24 June to 19 August (eight weeks)

Eligibility
Full-time senior undergraduate students currently registered at an overseas and non-Chinese university with good academic standing are eligible.

Sponsorships
Financial support will be offered to eligible students from low-income economies.

Outcome & Award

The 8-week APRU Biodiversity x CUHK Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) was concluded on August 19, 2023.

The biodiversity projects of SURP were led by Prof. Jerome Hui, Co-Chair of the APRU Biodiversity Program, and joined by students from five APRU universities: National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University Singapore, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, and Universiti Malaya. These students undertook research project supervised by professors from the School of Life Sciences of CUHK. Besides, a series of enrichment activities including a genome sequencing workshop and field trips were tailor-made for them to enhance their learning experience.

Zhiqian He, a student from UC Santa Barbara was among the top three teams receiving the Best Poster Presentation Award, out of some 100 student participants.
