The Asia Pacific Women in Leadership In-Person Summit 2024 will bring together, for the first time, participants and alumni of the APWiL Mentoring Program to discuss gender equity in the Pacific Rim region: the current state of gender equity in academia, strategies and practices to improve gender equity, and the experiences of APWiL Mentoring Program participants.

The Summit will be hosted by The University of Auckland and will take place prior to the APRU Annual Presidents’ Meeting (APM) to encourage APRU university presidents and senior international officers to attend. For information about APM please contact the Senior International officers of your university.

Each APWiL institutional representative will be responsible for selecting the two participants they want to put forth for the In-Person Summit.

There is capacity for each participating institution to select two participants (preferably one mentor and one mentee) from any cohort.

We ask that each APWiL institutional representative share the names of the two confirmed participants from your institution with Glynis Kincaid ([email protected]) by March 25 and then proceed to share the Summit webpage, which includes the Summit registration form, with your selected participants so they can register for the event.

Q: When will the event be held?
A: From June 22 – 23, 2024. Saturday, June 22 is the welcome reception dinner and Sunday, June 23 is the full day program.

Q: Where will the event be held?
A: The event activities will take place at Waipapa Taumata Rau University of Auckland’s Business School:

Sir Owen G Glenn Building
12 Grafton Road
Auckland 1010, New Zealand

Q: How will the two participants (preferably one mentor and one mentee) be selected?
A:
We ask that each APWiL institutional representative share the names of the two confirmed participants from your institution with APWiL Mentoring Program Manager Glynis Kincaid ([email protected]) by March 25 and then proceed to share the Summit webpage, which includes the Summit registration form, with your selected participants so they can register for the event.

Q: Is there a deadline for institutions to select the two participants?
A: Please share the names of the two confirmed participants with Glynis Kincaid ([email protected]) by March 25.

Q: Can the two participants be from any cohort (past and present)?
A: Yes, participants can be from any cohort, past and present.

Q: How will attendance at the event be supported financially?
A: We have asked each institution’s president/chancellor to financially support the two participants’ attendance at the in-person summit. Please check with your university’s APWiL institutional representative for details on the financial support available.

Q: Are there fees to attend the in-person summit?
A: Due to the generosity of the University of Auckland and Elsevier, there will be no fees to participate in the inaugural APWiL In-Person Summit.

Q: How do participants register?
A: Once the two participants have been formally selected by their institution, we ask that each APWiL institutional representative share the APWiL In-Person Summit webpage with the selected participants so they can register for the event. Participants can scroll down to the tab labeled “Registration” (next to “Transportation” and “FAQ”) to access the registration form.

Q: What is the recommended accommodation for the event?
A: Cordis Auckland By Langham Hospitality Group

83 Symonds Street
Auckland 1010, New Zealand

Q: What is the event program?
A: We are still finalizing the event program and speakers, but can share that it will focus on gender equity in the Pacific Rim region: the current state of gender equity in academia, strategies and practices to improve gender equity, and the experiences of APWiL Mentoring Program participants, as well as highlight elements from APRU’s Annual Presidents’ Meeting theme: “Oceans – The World’s Challenges Divide Us, the Ocean Currents Connect Us”. We will share Summit program details in March.

Q: What if we reach out to our present and past mentors/mentees and only the mentors or only the mentees can participate in the event?
A: You may select two mentors or two mentees instead of one mentor and one mentee if needed. Our goal is to have an event split of mentors and mentees in attendance but can be flexible if this is not possible for your institution. Please contact Glynis Kincaid ([email protected]) if you fit into this scenario.

Q: What if we want to send more than two participants (ex: one current mentee and two past mentors)?
A: We will add names to a waitlist until March 25 at 11:59 p.m. PDT and will share whether there is space off the waitlist by March 29. Please email Glynis Kincaid ([email protected]) if you would like to send more than two participants and share their name(s) for the waitlist.

Q: Why is there an initial cap of two participants per member institution?
A: In the spirit of inclusivity and equitable representation, it is our intention to invite participants from a wide array of universities that showcase the diversity of the Pacific Rim region. However, we are faced with the challenge of limited hosting capacity, which necessitates a thoughtful approach to participation. In our efforts to accommodate as many universities as possible, we must initially limit attendance to two participants per member institution.

Q: Does the event capacity (two participants per institution) consider attendance from our APWiL institutional representative(s), senior international leaders, APWiL Core Group member(s), or university president/chancellor?
A: No, this would be treated separately from the two participants per institution. Please let us know if your APWiL institutional representative(s), senior international leader(s), APWiL Core Group member(s), and/or university president/chancellor plans to attend the in-person summit. We will respond to each request based on capacity at the event venue.

If you have any additional questions that were not addressed in this list, please contact Glynis Kincaid ([email protected]).
