Rethinking the City

By 2050, cities will house nearly two-thirds of the world’s population and generate about three-quarters of global emissions. As population growth and climate change accelerate, we must better understand and manage the interconnections between cities and surrounding ecosystems.

The APRU Sustainable Cities and Landscapes Program, hosted by the University of Oregon, brings together policymakers, researchers, and practitioners to address the Pacific Rim’s most pressing urban, social, and ecological challenges. APRU seeks to make these interconnections and draw on the region’s diverse strengths, using different viewpoints to help tackle urban and sustainability challenges—such as ensuring adequate food, water, and energy—while protecting vulnerable populations and ecosystems.
