The 11th Annual APRU Global Health Virtual Case Competition 2026

Case competitions are increasingly popular worldwide as a way for students to apply critical thinking to “real‑world” challenges. In this international virtual competition, teams of 3–6 students will receive a challenge focused on an urgent global health issue.

Teams will have up to 12 weeks to create a video of up to 10 minutes in English that presents a realistic, well‑designed, and innovative solution. Videos should be uploaded to YouTube, Vimeo, Bilibili, or a similar platform, and the link should be submitted by email. An international panel of APRU Global Health Program members and other global experts will review and judge the entries.

Three videos will be selected by an international panel of judges for the final round, which will be held as part of the APRU Global Health Conference in Hong Kong in December 2026. The winning team will be announced at the conference and a prize of US$1,000 will be awarded.

Timeline

  • February 1 – Registration opens
  • March 15 – Case challenge sent out via email at 11:59am Pacific Time
  • May 1 – Deadline for team registration (teams registering after March 15 will still have only until June 15 to submit their videos)
  • June 15 – Final video submissions due by 11:59pm Pacific Time
  • September 1 – Three finalist teams announced via email
  • December 7 – Final judging of competition held during an APRU Global Health conference.

2026 Challenge

Containing Environmental Drivers of Antimicrobial Resistance to build resilient cities in the Asia-Pacific”

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is not solely a clinical or pharmaceutical problem; it is a systems-level challenge that reflects how humans interact with animals, ecosystems, and global markets. Unless the world acts urgently to address the global burden of AMR, including the environmental drivers, AMR will have devastating impacts to humans and animals. You will make recommendations for the allocation of US$10 million for interventions to combat AMR and will have to convince multiple stakeholders on the city’s Urban Resilience Task Force to approve your plan. This case incorporates dimensions of One Health, urban resilience planning, antimicrobial stewardship, and stakeholder tradeoffs. Please download the documents below for details.

Registration

Please register your team through the online registration system by May 1, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time.

Requirement

  • There is no cost to participate.
  • There is no maximum number of teams per each university. Students may participate in more than one team. Each team can be comprised of students from different universities but they must all come from APRU member universities or any university in Hong Kong, the host location of the APRU Global Health Conference 2026. To determine whether your university is an APRU member, please visit: apru.org/members/
  • A representative from each team must register the team by May 1, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time through our online registration system.
  • Teams must be comprised of currently enrolled university students (as of May 2026). Students of all disciplines and at all stages are welcome; including undergraduate, graduate and medical students.
  • Postdoctoral scholars and medical residents/interns are not eligible. Individuals holding faculty appointments are also not eligible.
  • Each team must consist of 3-6 students. Changes to team members may be made after registration, while an email must be sent to Dr. Withers at [email protected] to inform her of the changes before the submission deadline.
  • Solutions to the challenge must be student-driven. While we encourage students to draw on faculty and external mentorship and support, submissions should not be the work or research output of a faculty member.

Submission Instructions

Competing teams must submit the following materials by email by June 15, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time to [email protected].

  • Provide a link to your video on YouTube, Vimeo, Bilibili or a similar platform, together with the Disclosure on the Use of AI.
  • The video must be no longer than 10 minutes, or it will not be eligible.
  • At the beginning or end of the video, please include a slide listing the following for each member: full name, discipline of study, affiliated department and institution, and academic status (e.g. undergraduate, graduate, medical student). Please also clearly identify your team name.
  • Teams are encouraged to develop engaging and creative visual materials for their presentation. All team members must appear on screen at least once. As in a live presentation, you may include video clips, slides, animations, and other media or props. Teams should begin with an introduction, as they would for any audience.  After the introduction, the format is open. Teams may choose to “zoom in” by using videos, photos, maps, diagrams, interviews, and other supporting visuals.
  • We strongly recommend using microphones when filming. Please do not speed up the video in a way that makes difficult to understand, especially for non-native speakers. Subtitles are encouraged.
  • External video clips or b-rolls (developed by other people or agencies) are allowed, but they must not exceed a total of 180 seconds across the entire submission (all clips combined).
  • All teams automatically grant APRU permission to screen their videos at the conference and to post their videos on the APRU website for an unlimited time.
