Senior International Leaders’ Meeting 2025

Theme: Global range, local change: educational diplomacy and social impact

October 13-15, 2025

The Senior International Leaders’ Meeting (SILM) is an annual gathering of senior international leaders dedicated to reviewing and advancing global initiatives in higher education. Hosted in a different region each year, the 2025 meeting will be proudly hosted by Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ) in Quito, Ecuador, under the theme “Global range, local change: educational diplomacy and social impact.”

The theme highlights:

  • Global Challenges in Local Solutions: addressing universal issues with locally tailored responses, ensuring solutions resonate within communities.
  • Project-Based Research for Local Impact: leveraging experiential learning and research to foster global perspectives while driving social transformation at the local level.

By weaving together these pillars, the conference not only inspires collaboration, shares best practices, and explores new strategies to enhance the transformative impact of universities across the Pacific Riviera region, but also positions these efforts as vital pathways for the internationalization of higher education. It encourages global engagement, cross-border academic partnerships, and the development of students and faculty with a truly international outlook.

This year’s event will feature keynote addresses, panel discussions, and the International Advisory Committee meeting, alongside invaluable networking opportunities.

The event is for APRU members only. This event welcomes Senior International Leaders, professors, researchers engaged in biodiversity and biology, as well as Directors and officers from international offices to join us for this event.

Please note that the program is tentative and subject to change and further update.

We highly recommend the taxis that recommend the hotels; however, here are some tips for transportation in Quito:

Official taxis are yellow and should have a registration number on the side. We recommend using taxis with a taximeter (mandatory by law) or agreeing on a price before starting your trip. Cash is the primary payment method, and it’s best to carry small bills ($5 or $10), as larger bills may not be accepted.

Approximate fares:

Short rides within the city: $2.00 – $5.00

Airport to city center: $25.00 – $30.00

Uber

This ride-hailing app is widely available in Quito and offers a safer and more convenient option, especially at night. You can pay by card or cash, depending on your account settings.

Important: In some areas, like the Historic Center and certain residential zones, internet connectivity may be limited, making it harder to request a ride. If heading to these areas, consider arranging your return transportation in advance.

Airport Shuttle

USFQ Logistics Team can schedule an airport Shuttle to the Hotel or USFQ. Please contact Yomi Ortega, [email protected], with your flight and hotel information.

Tiputini Biodiversity Station (TBS)

Ecuadorian Amazon

Tiputini Biodiversity Station (TBS) is a research facility established in Amazonian Ecuador in 1994 by Universidad San Francisco de Quito in collaboration with Boston University. It serves as a steward of 744 hectares (about 1800 acres) of primary lowland rainforest approximately 300km (200 miles) from Quito. TBS is situated on the north bank of the Tiputini River, a southern tributary of the Napo River within the Yasuní Biosphere Reserve.

How To Get To Tiputini Biodiversity Station (Tbs)?

You will arrive in Coca by plane. From Coca, you will take boats and buses to TBS. It takes about 6 hours to arrive at TBS. When you return from TBS, you will also take a plane from Coca to Quito. The trip from Coca to TBS is as follows:

Boat: Coca – Pompeya (2 hours)

At Pompeya, you will enter the Repsol Oil Company facilities and pass through a security check. At this point, you might be asked to show your passport or you will simply be asked for your name. Your luggage will be passed through a baggage scanner.

Bus: Pompeya – Tiputini River (2 hours)

Boat: Tiputini River – TBS (2 hours)

What To Expect At Tiputini Biodiversity Station?

During your time at TBS, be prepared to disconnect from technology (yes, that includes the internet), walk a lot, and sometimes walk under the rain. There are several interesting nature walks, including a possible night walk. There is also a bird-watching tower and an opportunity to walk along a bridge between treetops. You can also expect to swim in the Tiputini River, relax in the cabins and play cards, eat delicious food, and see lots of monkeys, birds, spiders, and ants!

Must List:

To join the tour, you are required to have yellow fever vaccination record.

Please see the complete list here.
