The 11th Multi-Hazards Summer School (July 29–August 1, 2026) will be hosted and organized by the International Research Institute of Disaster Science (IRIDeS), Tohoku University. This year’s focus is “From Science to Society: Advancing Disaster Risk Reduction for a Resilient Future.”

 

Participants’ criteria: Graduate students and young researchers interested in disaster risk reduction (DRR) and management. 

Dates: July 29–August 1, 2026

Host: Tohoku University

Venue: International Research Institute of Disaster Science (IRIDeS) Building

Location: Sendai, Japan

 

Important note: NO FUNDING SUPPORT IS AVAILABLE FROM THE EVENT ORGANIZERS.

This Multi-Hazards 2026 Summer School aims to:

  • Equip students and early‑career researchers with foundational knowledge and practical skills to advance Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).
  • Strengthen effective collaboration between science and society in DRR practice.
  • Foster understanding of the science–policy–society interface through interdisciplinary learning.
  • Apply learning through case studies and field‑based experiences.
  • Enhance participants’ ability to translate scientific evidence into actionable strategies for building resilient communities.
  • Draw on experiences and lessons learned from the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami to inform DRR approaches.

 

 

The program consists of a 3-day seminar and a site visit to the area affected by the 2011 Great Eastern Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.

 

Day 1: July 29

  • Opening
  • Session 1: Lessons learned from the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami

 

Day 2: July 30

  • Session 2: Experience and case studies by various stakeholders
  • Session 3: Group activity: learning from various DRR research

 

Day 3: July 31

  • Session 4: Applying AI and Science for DRR
  • Session 5: Group activity

 

Day 4: August 1

  • Field trip to the affected site

Registration Deadline: June 5, 2026

 
The notification of the acceptance will be sent within a week from the deadline. Seats are limited and the APRU Multi-Hazards Program will make final selections to ensure the balance of regional representatives and university engagement.

No registration fee is required for this Summer School. Participants must fund their own travel and accommodation, as ‘NO FUNDING SUPPORT IS AVAILABLE FROM THE EVENT ORGANIZERS’.

 

Selected participants will receive:

  • Full program, inclusive of:
    • Welcome reception and opening ceremony
    • Academic conferences, sessions and group activities
    • Lunch during the program
    • One-day field trip excursion
    • Certificate of participation

 

Expenses covered by participants:

  • Flight tickets
  • Local transportation from/to the event venue (International Research Institute of Disaster Science building)
  • Accommodation (Suggestions on accommodations coming soon)
  • Visa application fees
  • Insurance throughout the program
  • Breakfast and dinner during the program
  • Other personal expenses

This program was launched in April 2013 by APRU and Tohoku University. The International Research Institution of Disaster Science (IRIDeS) of Tohoku University provides secretariat services and coordination support as the program hub. The main objectives are to harness the collective capacities of APRU Universities for cutting-edge research on disaster risk reduction (DRR) and to contribute to international policy-making discussions
